  • Power2Achieve Foundations Lesson 1.1.1

    As the second installment in the week long blog-series on Foundations Unit 1.1:  Consider the Perspective of Others, today’s post will briefly summarize the lesson 1.1.1 content and explain a few basic elements of the material in a Foundations lesson.

    Foundations lesson 1.1.1 is titled “Communicating to Connect with Others.”  This lesson is all about turning the common perception of what “social networking” is upside down.  Today when we hear the words social networking, we immediately think of Facebook, myspace, Linkedin, Foursquare, etc.  Technically speaking however, these are actually elements of social media.

    Social networking is simply about making connections with people you interact with.  For example, when as a teacher we attend a multi-school professional development days, how do we begin to interact with the people around us?  For students, when they join a club or team, start a new school year with new classmates, begin a job, or move on to college, how do they start making connections?

    Communicating to connect with others is a fundamental element of building a culture of excellence & ethics.  This lesson uses the Power2Achieve Social Networking Tool to teach students real strategies that will help them build and deepen connections and relationships with others in school, work, and beyond.
    On the lesson 1.1.1 webpage, which you can get to by clicking on the Lesson 1.1.1 link when you get to the Unit 1.1 homepage, you will find the following:

    • Visual Learning Resource {Slides}   (these are an optional instructional resource we encourage people to use)
    • Unit Videos
    • Extension Activities (we will be adding these throughout the fall)

    All of these are materials you may want to use as you teach this lesson on Communicating to Connect with Others.

    Read through these materials and think about how you might teach this lesson in your own educational setting (by the way, we’ve got people using these Tools in classrooms ranging from K-12, with athletes of all ages and competition levels, with school faculty and staff, with parents, and even with businesses…so think creatively)

    That’s all I’ll get into in this post, but tomorrow I’ll highlight lesson 1.1.2 and will take some time to explain the actual format of the lesson plan and other materials.

    What’s the theme for the day at IEE?

    “I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumb-nail. In the midst of this chopping sea of civilized life, such are the clouds and storms and quicksands and thousand-and-one items to be allowed for, that a man has to live, if he would not founder and go to the bottom and not make his port at all, by dead reckoning, and he must be a great calculator indeed who succeeds.

    Simplify, simplify.”

    Today:  IEE team meeting involving some of our key partners distribution and training partners from Maryland/DC, Iowa, Illinois, Connecticut, New York, Kansas, and Texas.  There are seemingly thousands upon thousands of important topics for discussion…so how to we make it an efficient and productive day that can help set course for a dynamic 2010-2011?

    We began by brainstorming and agreeing upon a list of norms for the day using a real Power2Achieve Tool, the Portable Compact-4-Excellence.  Here’s what we agreed to do:

    • Say on task
    • Courage to bring us back
    • Respect different needs & personalities
    • Don’t be “innocent bystanders”
    • Use time & talent well

    The entire process for the formation of our Portable Compact took over an hour…a waste of time with so many priorities and such finite time?  That’s not exactly how we see it, because the process simultaneously allowed us to simplify…to focus on what everyone needs to be able to do when they leave this room today:

    1)  Communicate clearly {efficiently & accurately}

    2)  Build to meet the need

    3)  Exercise expertise
